Marie Callender's La Mesa Reviews from The Last Year
1. Service: waitress was super friendly. Made sure refills
1. Service: waitress was super friendly. Made sure refills were done without being asked for refills. 2. Food: pot pie is highly recommended. It's way better than the san diego pie co on El cajon Blvd. 3. Atmosphere: where do I begin? I know I'll just say this. They say that eventually every style comes back into style. Not sure when the style of this place will come back Into style,so maybe don't change a thing. 4. Overall: if you can overlook the atmosphere then enjoy eating here.
Forgot to take pictures because I was eating with a group
Forgot to take pictures because I was eating with a group of ladies and it was awkward to take photos of our food so it didn't happen. There were five of us and one of us ordered the soup and salad special for $16.99. Another order the pick three special for $15.99 and three of us ordered the veggie taco plate with two tacos stuffed with a variety of delicious vegetables and avocado with a side of black beans that were very tasty and pico de gallo. The service was a little slow at our table, but I think the waitress was running around very busy. Took a long time to get our waters and our orders and our bills paid at the end of the meal. Restaurant seem fairly clean, but it seems a little tired and in need of an upgrade to spruce the place up. Hostess was very friendly and seated us right away. We were able to get reservations, but we didn't need them at this hour. Don't forget that they serve you cornbread when you sit down at the table so that is a big plus! lots of these little special touches are being taken away from restaurant dining these days. It's also nice to see and all you can eat soup and salad bar still available after the Covid nonsense.
Great food, generous portions, great service, and so many
Great food, generous portions, great service, and so many choices for pies. Doesn't get much better than that. Very fair prices too, and that's getting harder to find. I loved the turkey dinner and the cheesy potato soup. The double cream lemon pie is one of the best pies I've ever had.
Chicken pot pie was delicious.
The cheesecake was amazing (my son ate it before I could snap a picture)!
Ok...not really a 4! I just used to love Marie
Ok...not really a 4! I just used to love Marie Callender's. And still, the rhubarb pie was wonderful (especially the flakey crust). Actually, the salad bar was very slim and disappointing. And my turkey club not really very good. So, I'll go again for the pie and look for something simple to order??? Hope my "tricky" 4 rating will help them stay open...you just go out there and help out too. Waitress nice, surroundings nice plenty of parking etc. S M I L E S !
On our way back from a day trip we decided to try Marie
On our way back from a day trip we decided to try Marie calendars as we thought it was old-fashioned American food but to our dismay, the cornbread didn't even taste like cornbread. It was like a mix, but no corn flavor or smell or nothing. Worst of all was the meatloaf with chunks of hard carrots in it, and no taste whatsoever. It was the worst food and we bothsuffered all night with cramps from that we will never eat at that restaurant again
Sent to Marie Callender Corparte.
Hello, Today we were at the Marie Callenders on Alvrado in San Diego. We ordered the sampler appetizer, My spouse had the mini chicken pot pie with the slice of pie, I had the fish fry special of the day. The appetizer you could tell was all frozen and deep fried, which is expected but, the chicken fingers were freezer-burned before it was fried, the onion rings were not cooked they were soggy and cold inside, and the green beans were pretty good. We told our waiter who said "Oh! Really? Well let me get you some drinks." and then he walked away. So ok, I was a tad shocked. Normally, they would offer to recook or even cook the onion rings... well at all. The apathy and complete lack of concern were surprising. The main meal came out. My fish looked burnt. I said, "Wow, that's overdone. I can see it." The waiter said, "Is there anything else I can get you?". My spouse jumped in and said, "Just wait a second and see how done that is. It looks burnt". I went to cut it and it crumbled. I sent it back and asked that it not be cooked as much. The waiter came back in less than three minutes and said, this is a direct quote, I wrote it down, "It seems like that is a common complaint. It is how our fish comes. Can I get you something else?" I said no after the mess that we had been served. He didn't offer a manager to talk to or well anything at all. So I sat there while my spouse ate her chicken pot pie, which was good by the way. The crust was amazing. It was hot and cooked all the way through. I decided it's Marie Callenders at least I can have cheesecake without risk right? She got the double-cream blueberry pie. The cheesecake was so over-the-top vanilla that it left a nasty aftertaste. I couldn't eat that either. The other pie was great. My waiter, when I told him and said... You guessed it nothing. He didn't care. Since I wasn't offered a manager during our horrible meal. On the way out I asked for one. When I told him the appetizers were frozen and just not good. He said, and this is a quote, "Right, that's how we do it. We can't change that". I didn't even get the chance to talk about my fish. I mean what would be the point? He had more apathy than our waiter. This is a top-down problem. I have never been more disappointed with a restaurant than I have with this. I am mailing this to you and then I will post this on as many social pages, and review pages as I can find. Your people might not care but I sure do.
THE WORST. EVER. Place to eat!

Ordered two slices of pie.
One slice was like a dinky leftovers from the pie plate. So disappointing. It was vanilla custard. Absolutely no vanilla flavor at all. What has happened to their pie quality???
Their happy hour on Sundays are cool because it's all day.
Their pies are ok but a little too sweet
I ordered a Cobb salad and it was awful.
The turkey was about hard as rock and the bacon was not thoroughly cooked. It's the worst Cobb salad I've ever tasted?
We love coming here.
Shannon always gives us such great service and everytime I go here it brings back childhood memories. Love the pot pie, Shepards pie and well all the pie!
Mmmm pie.
Worth the drive for pumpkin pie for a holiday dinner. Reasonably priced and so happy they had the right pie flavor I was looking for.
I must say there are too many homeless standing by the door.
Food great some days others over or under cooked, staff some of the ladies are very nice Marlene stands out, I go about once a week
Yes, I gave Marie Callender's five stars because I love
Yes, I gave Marie Callender's five stars because I love their pot pies! I am a Midwest gal who enjoyed her fair share of frozen Banquet and Marie Callender's pot pies so this restaurant is nostalgic, tasty, and comforting to me. I have dined here several times. I have only came here to get the one item they do best, their Chicken Pot Pie. First couple of visits, I ordered the larger portion of the Chicken Pot Pie. Now, I order the combo meal which comes with a side salad and a slice of pie. I usually order their Caesar salad. It's delicious to me. I am not a fan of dessert pie so I am never impressed with them, yet it is a good addition. This time I ordered the French Apple Pie because I wanted a crumble crust. Again, I am not fan of dessert pies so I ate the bottom pie crust and some crumbles and gave the rest to my partner. His mom ordered the same dish as I. His dad ordered the Shepard's pie combo with the Caesar salad and custard pie. He stated the Shepard's pie was good and the custard pie was alright. My partner stated the Meatloaf Plate he ate was exactly how you expect meatloaf to taste like. Our server was friendly. Typically, when we have dined here our service has always been good. The restaurant is a nice diner that caters to Seniors. Vintage decor, clean, and it smells nice. Again, I love what they have, and it is the Chicken Pot Pie and Caesar salad.
Hearty meal priced right!
Love Marie Callender's and wish they were out on the east coast. A good place to get a simple hearty meal that won't break the bank. We had the mini chicken pot pie deal for 15.99, served with caesar salad and a slice of pie. It all was delicious especially the fresh strawberry pie!
