We have had pleasant relaxed experiences and enjoyed the food at branches of Megan’s more local to us at Battersea Power Station and Old York Road, Wandsworth. Those branches are newer and fresher than at Kensington which, although only opened in 2019, felt a tad tired in places, particularly worn stairs down to washrooms with water all over the floor. Matters are not helped by an active policy of welcoming dogs, illustrated by the fact our waitress had to take time off from serving tables at a busy restaurant to mop the floor where a small dog had relieved itself before leaving. At one level we were pleased to get a table at short notice. But the atmosphere was frankly claustrophobic not assisted by some mindlessly intrusive background music. Waiting staff and perhaps also those working in the kitchen were overwhelmed by the demands on them. My beer came promptly but waiting staff had to be asked several times for water. Part of our order (skinny fries) was seemingly forgotten as it arrived when we had nearly finished our meal. A waiter arrived with part of our order without identifying any of the dishes in his hand. Given that most dishes are a melange of many different ingredients it is not immediately apparent which is which. Megan’s has simply expanded far too quickly. It’s an interesting concept selling essentially Middle Eastern snacks within a very English cafe but its uniqueness is diluted by the brand’s roll-out. What may have seemed quirky at the start now just appears downright odd. And under such pressure execution of the dishes becomes flawed. Very good chips but an uninspiring brunch and a bowl with chicken pieces which seemed a little less than fresh; a flatbread with lamb and a mixture of rather miscellaneous ingredients.
