Exceptional
One of the best restaurants in Chicago. The food is creative, wonderfully executed; the service is attentive and professional, without being overbearing. We shared everything, and probably over-ordered (our fault, not the waiters) - but everything was so good and we managed to finish everything. The butter chicken was a particular highlight. They have a nice bar area and drinks menu too. Fantastic. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but a few things to improve
Upon arrival we where lead to the upstairs dining room, but nobody cared to take our coats. Maybe it was better as the room (to dark) was a bit cold. The menu is with quad code, but the location doesn’t offer any FREE WI-FI so foreign guest either have to use roaming services or ask for an “old style” paper menu that is nor updated. The staff is friendly, but the only person present full time is the “water men” so every other necessity you have to wait that a waiter shows up. The delivery of food was quick, and food was good: the green pea Kulcha delicious, the sabauda a cutlet good, unfortunately the pork belly was rather cold (also the pan it was served in was cold, delicious the chili cheese Kulcha. Not to be missed the rose ice cream.

We (my wife and I) stopped for dinner in Chicago on our way from Ann Arbor to Minneapolis. She wanted good indian cuisine and I'd heard great things about Rooh and sister store Bar Goa. A friend told me to eat cultural cuisine where the people of that culture eat...that is the best of that cultures cuisine. Looking around the other tables and seeing an Indian face at each table told me I am at that place. The dinner was tasty. The after dinner drinks were the best. The atmosphere was delightful. The team that greeted, seated and waited on us worked like a well oiled machine. We learned that this team has worked together for over a year. I don't need to tell you how rare that is in this post-pandemic, great resignation and quiet quitting era. The enthusiasm of the staff told me Rooh Chicago is a great place to work and that they took pride in their roles there. The combination of great food, fair pricing and elegant ambiance checked all the boxes for us.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed, very average fare at Michelin prices.
Was expecting elevated Indian food and was disappointed with average fare presented in a thoughtless manner. The evening started out great, wonderful waiter who explained the featured offerings. Cocktail program was thoughtful and elegant. Our table of four had two rounds and each was balance and unique. Understanding the menu was a challenge; the way items were presented suggested individual servings and less sharing. Everything was separate which was very annoying with this sort of food. Rice, sauces, chutney and naan all had to be ordered individually. The naan selection was limited to plain and garlic and resembled an unpalatable pita more than naan. The food came out in a haphazard manner and was basically scattered all over the table with the staff knowing where each order originated. This would have been fine if we were advised this is how it would come out. Ordering for the table is a different strategy then individually and we had been told individual servings is how they did things. This resulted in a quick adaptation and redundant dishes. The presentations were bland and I was not motivated to take a picture of any dish. The taste was pedestrian for Indian cuisine but I have had better similar food in strip malls. In summary: the service was good, the atmosphere loud and noisy, food unremarkable and cocktails excellent. Overall I was very disappointed.

Touted as ‘one of Chicago’s best new restaurants’, by Chicago Tribune when it first opened in 2019, Rooh Chicago is executive chef Sahil Sethi's interpretation of modern authentic Indian food. We tried the Chef’s menu and so glad we did. What we had: 🌸 Grilled Prawn with a Mangolorean Ghee Roast Masala and fennel 🌸 Chicken Kohzi: pakora with curry leaves and Kerela podi masala 🌸 Sweet Potato Chaat: fried kale with a drizzle of sweet tamarind and mint chutney 🌸 Tandoor Smoked Pork Belly: pandi curry with a sesame curry leaf crumble 🌸 Tandoori Cauliflower: the cauliflower was slightly raw and could have done with a bit more cooking. The kadai sauce was delicious though. 🌸 Paneer Pasanda with a red pepper makhani and cashews gravy: the filling sandwiched inside the paneer was yum. The gravy had the prefect balance of favors without overpowering the senses. 🌸 Butter Chicken was the bomb! Tender delicate pieces of succulent chicken in the gravy with that smokiness that a tandoor cooked dish brings- the sauce was sweet and creamy. 🌸 Bengali Lamb Shank: kosha Mangsho with lamb was something I’ve never tried cooking as lamb it is difficult to cook shank with those Bengali flavors but this was perfect. The Bengali Garam masala oozing out from the smooth curry was reminiscent of a Bengali Sunday meal. Seeing this on the menu I asked the server if the chef was Bengali but apparently he is from Delhi, not Bengal :-) 🌸 Garlic Naan 🌸 Saffron Rice After an enormous meal, the dessert did not disappoint either. 🌸 Chocolate Rum Ball: toasted milk ice cream had a lot of things going for it. Served on a bed of frozen crumbled raspberries and chocolate it was creamy smooth but for me the piece de resistance was the last item. 🌸 Tutti Fruiti Cassata was simply AMAZING. Candied Papaya, Thandai Rose Semifreddo. A frozen mousse with Thandai flavors with rose and nuts was a perfect way to finish the meal. This was truly curry heaven with all those delicious smooth creamy flavors. Nothing was drowned in too much gravy, it was just right. How I wish we had this quality of Indian food in Rochester MN!

Be the first to ReplyDon't go and watch out for manager Shawn
Horrible service, awful delivery of restaurant week menu and extremely rude manager who had the temerity to "red flag us so we wouldn't be able to go to any other restaurant in Chicago". One khulcha for 3 of us although they charged full price for 3, long wait for food, then wouldn't give us a bowl to carry home the lamb shank with gravy and insisted on a foil instead. Then the icing on the cake was the manager Shawn saying we should expect michelin level service because they weren't rated by them!! So much for the notice on the board. This is a wannabe fine dining restaurant which operates as a curry house. So if the owners are listening, time to change out the manager or you will be closing shop soon.

A top 50 Michelin restaurant in 2021. Why go? To eat & drink! We arrived early (not my fault this time). To the bar we sauntered, excited about dinner, though we had to wait a bit for upstairs seating. A large, long bar, from front to rear greets you on your right. The included picture is to your right. Any drink you desire is available, though an eight (8) drink specialty wheel ($$$-$$$$) is provided with slick names, wondrous libations, exotic (looking) accoutrements . . . based on basic distilled spirits & alcohols (i.e., gin, rum, whisky (bourbon, rye), tequila, vodka, etc). To assist, the wheel details flavors & dryness. All are excellent; we tried three.
Once seated wee took notice of the restaurant’s layout: 2 floors, the upper front with a room-long bench on one side, large table & booths on the other, hardwood floors, in other words: sound bright (#loud). Add alcohol, youth, any celebration & an out-of-towner: it’s not for couples, yet those set to party. The upper back area is separated by two uni-sex lavatories. It’s booths, slightly dimmer lighting, and comfortable for older dinners with cellphone lights or couples. Hint: make sure you ask for the ‘appropriately’ desired lighting, sound & gestational environment.
Seriously.
Our food was great, to excellent. We ate last on “Restaurant Week” from a special set menu. When eating Indian, Nepali, and Peshawar foods, we like cleansing beer to deal with unknown spice heat levels: #Kingfisher. No #Cobra, Budweiser may seem similar…, but. The regular menu looks fabulous. Everyone we spoke with (very friendly atmosphere between tables (again, could be loud), including bar, seemed local, repeat customers that enjoyed all & had suggestions.
The staff makes the place, however; for absolutely everyone. The hostess was delightful. Our bar maiden told us during drinks of her family’s historical plumb distillation process; entertaining us with great stories of different spirits. The assistant manager was also efficient.
We will return. We cannot say more positive things: #go. Enjoy!
Oh my!
We love Authentic Indian food. My husband is Indian and since his mother has become ill she has not been able to cook for many years. I came across this restaurant in a search and read the reviews. They were not wrong! My husband took a picture of his Masala and sent it to his best friend saying it was the best he had ever had. I had the whole sea bass and we shared the large plate of roasted cauliflower—oh my goodness, it was fabulous! Muah!

If you love Indian and want the elevated version of it, then this is a place to go. We sat on the patio that was covered, which was a bonus. Not the prettiest ambiance, but that was OK. We had 6-7 dishes and all were good. Some were great. I would absolutely go back, which is a statement in Chicago.

Wow wow wow. Outstanding cocktails. Outstanding food. Everything was beyond delicious. Plus the restaurant is so chic. Love that they have plenty of vegan options on the menu. This place is a MUST in Chicago!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but low on hospitality
We are a family of foodies and we were in Chicago for a holiday. We had heard from our friends that this was a restaurant worth visiting. Coming from Dubai, which is a haven for global cuisine, especially Indian, our curiosity was aroused. On a rainy night, we decided on the go to Rooh. The closing time was 9.30pm and we reached by 9pm. We were greeted reluctantly by the Manager and offered a table. I made a comment that we had heard a lot about Rooh but couldn’t call in to make a reservation. He replied curtly that a lot of people say that but never take the effort to reserve. I replied, ‘Aren’t you happy that we are here?’. This seemed to cool him off. The waitress at the table though was very pleasant and the food awesome. Our whole experience was marred by the Manager’s behavior. Indian cuisine is not only about the taste and quality of the food, it’s spices but also about welcoming and hospitality. On that count, I would downgrade this restaurant. I hope the owners take note of it.
Be the first to ReplyBest in class Indian food
The best India food we have had in the US. It’s a great take on India cuisine. The blending of spices with the vegetables is almost perfect.
We had all the appetizers all of them were great. Their sweet potato one is fantastic.
The main dishes were awesome. Very tasty. The only issue I had was the main dishes were a bit lukewarm when it came to temperature. They could have been warmer.
Of the vegetarian dishes the Chickpea curry and dal are the top two with the Panner dish coming in very close behind them. The Roti was excellent and soft.
Will definitely visit again!
New Indian fusion
Delicious and interesting menu with good vegetarian options. Unusual cocktail specials. Service was very good as well. The tandoori cauliflower was spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyQuite a flavorful Indian fusion cuisine.
We started at the bar and our bartender was great while waiting for the table. Place was busy but served reasonably quick. We thought we had an hour wait as we were winging it for dinner that evening after a long bike ride on the lake shore trail. We were seated perhaps within 10-15 mins. Service was attentive and at times with masks on it was a bit hard to hear everything our waitress said thus we would just ask again. The place was pretty chill throughout and noted all ages and ethnicity enjoying their meals.
We agree that it was traditional Indian fused with some non traditional as we read on other reviews after our visit and it did not disappoint and if anything pleasantly surprised with the taste especially of our dishes. We ordered the lamb keema hyderadabi as our small plate for starters and this minced lamb with green peas and potato mousse was wonderful and it’s mixture of mild curry allowed you to really taste the ingredients and the brioche was neat and made for quite a bit of ‘dipping’. I actually waited for the Basmati rice so that I could slather the dish on top.
We then went on with the Butter Chicken with some garlic naan. The four pieces of chicken was just right for the two of us and again it did not disappoint. The spices were great and it had a lot of sauce that allowed to use for our naan bread. Sometimes when we’ve had butter chicken in other places it’s usually a ton of ‘cream’ and rich or a few times quite spicy and I must say this was one of the best butter chicken dishes I’ve had. I’m by no means an expert but definitely a dish to try. If you’re quite hungry then you may want your own but one small plate as above and then the butter chicken was plenty for my wife and I. To help keep the ‘chill’ on our meal a glass of Chardonnay (my wife) and/or a bottle of Kingfisher beer was great with dinner.
Compliments to staff from the bartender to our waitress and of course the chef, well done. We’ll make sure to revisit!
