Satori Makawao Reviews from The Last Year
Had a great meal.
Worth coming to. Great little up country town. My favorite meal on the island. Can't wait to come back next year. Don't be in a hurry. A one man show. See photo of the dish I got. Beautiful
I live in a little town a bit like Makawao.
Used to be a working town but now host to upscale shops and eateries. And that's fine. What comes with a change like that though is people like Jamie who was preparing food in the little shack at Satori on a rainy afternoon. It's 3:00 and I have some tacos in mind for dinner so I just ordered a Cali-Aloha hand roll which was incredible. Smoked mackerel, a bit of spicy aioli, cucumber. Very intentionally prepared with incredible ingredients. if i lived here this would be a weekly eat for me. i so appreciate the attention here to elevated yet simple food. So go to Satori. eat some smoked marlin. say hi to Jamie.

A small food truck serving some delicious sushi tucked in a nook on the lanes of Makawao's main street with just the sweetest chef. He was the only one doing all the work from taking the order to cooking and he was still so patient and smiling throughout. I was eager to try it as they claim to be a farm to table sushi spot. The hand rolls were delicious and the favorite of all the ones we tried was the Unagi hand roll. Also , tried the satori sushi bowl and it was pretty good too. They have a nice ambiance going on and it feels less like a food truck and more like an outdoor restaurant.

Fuggn freshness! Worth every min of the wait! Grab a beer from General Store (also amazing) and order the Green Goodess × 2 (rolls are in the small side)
Handrolls are bomb.
Great vegan options. Always a fan with the food. Bring back the dance parties!
Such a lovely location.
And clearly such potential. Sadly, the food is mediocre at best. Unfortunately , Sushi was unavailable when I dined there. I had a rice bowl. Rice was adequate but served Ice cold. The fresh vegetables were essentially salad and were underdressed. Very little flavor at all. The vegan pesto ? I think that's what it was, and it was also devoid of flavor . I also added the hamakaua mushrooms. They were cooked nicely and perhaps a little salt in the cooking would enhance their flavor. They had tamari on the table and it was the lightest tamari I have ever not tasted. $17 for the bowl plus $3 for the mushrooms. A tad overpriced given it was a little more than a cup of cooked rice with not a lot of salad on top. This is all so easily fixable. A light touch is always nice...completely devoid of flavor is not. Come on guys, you can do so much better.

Fantastic fresh dishes made under a large tree I can't identify. Wonderful respite in the adorable village of Makawao.

No rolls were available, which was what I was hoping for, and lots of things were sold out on the menu even though I was in line the minute they opened. Wait was 30 min for a sushi bowl and a kombucha - only one person making all the food and drinks. Bowl was just okay. Wanted to LOVE it. Instagram made it look good. Will try again next time.
I'm with Shelly on this one.
I came here because of the solid reviews online and it's convenience to my accommodation. However, I was really disappointed. Although I appreciate the ideology behind this concept, it just really was a let down that wasn't going to break anything but my bank account for what it was worth. The highlights were the sushi rice and the seaweed. The ingredients were fresh, but put together, it seemed like I would have been better off making these back in my own kitchen. The ramen didn't have a strong enough dashi or miso flavor. I honestly couldn't tell you what the broth was supposed to be. The macadamia nuts also added an unwanted texture to a small cup. It wasn't for me, but maybe it will be later.
