The Courtyard Tea Room Boston Reviews from The Last Year
If it had been a slightly better value I'd rate it 5 stars
If it had been a slightly better value I'd rate it 5 stars but at the cost it was it needed to be a bit more amazing to earn 5 stars. That said our primary server was super nice and she plus the overall team provided excellent service. The scones were buttery and delicious and came with clotted cream and a pretty good if a bit runny and not quite lemony enough lemon curd. The savory treats were ok but not consistently great. Puff pastry with meat was soggy and tasteless. Mini lobster roll ok but nothing special. Salmon mousse was the best of the three and above average if not amazing.
10/10 experience and way more filling than I thought.
Honestly don't be afraid to arrive on an empty stomach because we didn't even finish everything. If you are lucky you can get a table by the windows with a view of the courtyard. My favorite afternoon tea experience thus far
For $72, we expected better food.
The room is beautiful and the service was friendly and attentive but the food was mediocre. I've had better at half the price. Such a lost opportunity to do something interesting!
Three ladies had high tea on Thursday April 25 at 1:30.
It was an incredible experience. They gave us a corner window table, felt very regal. The women server could not have been kinder. The food was yummy and plentiful. My favorites include the scones, lobster sandwiches and panna cotta! The setting feels very European, the library is gorgeous, it's a special experience.
We spent our last day in Boston enjoying this lovely tea.
We made reservations just a few days prior after we strolled through the library, so happy my daughter suggested we try this out. Everything was delicious and I especially enjoyed the salmon spread, scone (best ever), butters and the nice assortment of desserts. They boxed up the tiny bit we had leftover as well. Service was perfect and we never felt rushed. Perfect place for a mother-daughter or best friend get together.
Opportunity for formal tea service in an amazing location
This is the first time I've had afternoon tea in Boston, and you almost couldn't top the McKim building for a location, make sure to wander around upstairs and into the courtyard while there. Complimentary coat check is offered. The staff was very kind and accommodating, but we needed reservations in advance and upon arrival I found a queue of all the others that had our same reservation. They seem to do coordinated service so a little like a cattle-call we were let in all at once and seated according to reservations. This sort of service en masse made it seem a lot less special and I also felt rushed, we were certainly on the clock. The cute books that held our menus were taken away within minutes and we didn't have time to finish the tiered sweet and savory finger selection. The food was very good and the selections were varied, but this is not something you want to box for later. The room was cute, but I don't remember any extra atmosphere. Certainly no live harpist that I've enjoyed at other teas. Honestly you walk through the less regimented bar and I'd suggest just grabbing a drink in that cozy cute room rather than the full tea. note, we had a 3:15 reservation on a Friday and the library closes at 5pm.
Having high tea at the Boston Public Library has been on my
Having high tea at the Boston Public Library has been on my bucket list since I moved to Boston over 5 years ago. It's notoriously difficult to get a weekend reservation but luckily I was able to snag one for a Sunday at 11am. There is a mandatory coat check, and then you are transported into this beautiful room overlooking the courtyard. The menus are placed inside books, which is a cute touch. Really the only choice on the menu is type of tea, as the rest is preset. I got the Copley Cozy (earl grey latte), which was nice and cozy as the name would suggest. For food, they started with a mini quinoa salad and tiny cup of mushroom soup - both were great! Then they brought out the main attraction - the 3-tiered tower of sandwiches, pastries, and biscuits. Everything tasted delectable - some favs were the mango cake, mini lobster roll, and biscuits with orange jam and clotted cream. They refill the tea whenever you run out. Note that they do gently ask you to leave after 90-minutes so the next group can get seated. I think the experience is overall a bit overpriced ($65pp) for the quantity of food, but you're paying for the experience and memories, so I think it's worth doing once if you're into this kind of thing!
The ambiance was great and the service was very attentive
The ambiance was great and the service was very attentive but the food was lacking. The starter seasonal soup and salad were exceptional so I really had high expectations but sadly went downhill after that. Out of the six savory bites only one was to our liking - the peppered ricotta tart. Everything else was bland and the cucumber on my English cucumber sandwich was stale and turning orange. The tea selection was just okay. We had the Jasmine Pearls green tea and the Iron Goddess oolong tea. The tea aroma was nice but flat in taste. Most of the desserts were too sweet for me and it didn't help that the tea didn't cut it. Besides the ricotta tart, the other bites that I enjoyed were bacon pumpkin spice cupcake and chai spice scone.

Was meaning to check out the afternoon tea at this spot for years, and it was totally worth it for the experience! Located by the Map Room of the Boston Public Library, it's definitely a cute lil spot for small celebrations and dates. Plus, the staff were very friendly with accommodating to special occasions (at least during this visit of mine). Food-wise, I'd say that many of their treats worked well with their teas - plus their cocktails were also very yummy, so I would totally recommend giving their alcoholic drinks a shot! (Especially the Perfect Pair and the Stolen Moments on their drink menu). My personal favorites of their treat selection would include their alfajores and peppered ricotta tart since they were flavorful, yet not too strong when it came to their respective tastes. I'd also like to note that their passion fruit petite four, although being very tart, was very refreshing and definitely paired really well with the hot tea! Overall, despite being a lil pricey, I would definitely come back to experience this once again someday.
Came here yesterday for the first time and it was beautiful.
The tea room itself was very cozy and spacious. Service was amazing as well. The price was $64 per person and it came with a tea option, appetizer, and the 3 tier. I was pretty stuffed towards the middle tier, so I brought my desserts home. The earl grey teas were delicious. I would definitely come again for a fun. 9/10 great experience.

Amazing afternoon tea! The tea sandwiches were all so good, I highly recommend experiencing this! I have been wanting to go to afternoon tea at the BPL for so long, but when I lived in Boston, it was only in Wednesdays. I visited Boston recently and found out they have afternoon tea available more days now, so I couldn't miss the chance. I picked the blue flower earl grey tea and it did not disappoint. You can switch teas for an additional fee as well if you wanted.
I came here last Sunday for afternoon tea.
I made a reservation in advance since this place is quite popular. We were seated in the large beautiful tea room, I think the smaller map room is for people who are not doing the tea service. This was my first time at tea service ever and I wasn't sure how it was going to work. They gave us a menu of what we were going to get, and the prix fixe menu means you get one of everything (per person). We got a small soup and salad, and many small bites, both savory and sweet, as well as a few scones served with deliciously tart lemon curd and buttery cream. We left absolutely stuffed. They gave us a box to take home some of the leftover desserts. We also got our own teapots of tea and could get refills and try different teas. I really enjoyed the Cozy Copley and the Wedding Blend teas. It was a fun experience, definitely something I would take a friend visiting Boston to.
Amazing people, ambience, food, service, and overall
Amazing people, ambience, food, service, and overall experience at the Courtyard Tea Room. Make sure to call ahead to make a reservation!
I love a tea service and experiencing one in the Boston
I love a tea service and experiencing one in the Boston Public Library is next level. I've attended twice; once solo and once with my husband. Both times felt special with plenty of food, enough to take some treats to go. Many of the sandwiches and pastries are the same, but they change some options seasonally I was bummed this most recent time they were out of Earl Grey, but what can you do? I'm not sure how strict they are on dress code but give yourself a reason to go a little fancy. Also, make sure to make reservations ahead of time. And if they're booked, add yourself to the waitlist and a spot may open up. It happened for me!
I have never had afternoon tea, nor have I ever been to
I have never had afternoon tea, nor have I ever been to England, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Courtyard Tea Room. This would be a great spot for a date, birthday celebration, or a treat-yourself type of day. This place is reservation-only, and reservations are hard to come by, so plan ahead! When you arrive, you must check in your coat at the complimentary coat check down the hall. Then, you line up at the entrance until they let you in after confirming your reservation. There is a wide selection of complimentary tea with free refills. I got the Cozy Copley (Earl Grey), which was average, but that is expected given that refills are free. There are also sugar cubes if you prefer a sweeter cup. The seasonal soup was some sort of pumpkin soup that was very smooth and rich. The salad was a bed of quinoa with a yogurt sauce and some garnishes. I enjoyed both. The main event was a $64 tower of scones, savory bites, and petit fours. I enjoyed everything, but my favorites were the scones, peppered ricotta tart, and bacon pepita brittle pumpkin spice cupcake. I do think the price is worth it because I got full from this amount (probably also because I was drinking so much tea), and you are also paying for the experience of sitting in one of the prettiest buildings in Boston.
Hidden Gem in Boston
The Courtyard Tea Room at the Boston Public Library is a hidden gem of the city. The vendor, The Catered Affair, is well known in the Boston area for delicious food and impeccable service. They live up to that reputation at the Courtyard. The fixed price tea menu was filling and delicious. We ended up taking home almost all the desserts because we were too full. The service was extraordinary, and the atmosphere just perfect to take your partner for tea or to meet a friend.
Good experience
I treated myself to an early birthday afternoon tea at The Courtyard Tea Room. It’s located in Boston Public Library in Copley Square inside the historic McKim building. The menu is presented in a book, which in itself was super cute. What I had Ras Chai Latte - a malty tea blend of cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves with a hint of pumpkin spice and vanilla. I would have liked a bit of a stronger tea, though - it was very pale. Seasonal Soup & Salad: cauliflower and apple soup with goat cheese, quinoa & pumpkin salad. It was just ok, tastewise. It definitely looked better than it tasted. Smoked salmon with capers and dill on pumpernickel English Cucumber with radish, lemon cream on Pain de Mie Chilled Maine Lobster with lemon, chives on a mini brioche roll Smoked Virginia ham with pimento cheese on parsnip biscuits Peppered Ricotta Tart with rosemary kumquat relish and Aleppo chili Greek Chicken Salad with sun-dried tomato, lemon, olive, cucumber on whole wheat bread Chai Spice Scone & Traditional Scone served with Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and orange marmalade. The orange marmalade was absolutely delicious. I liked the variety in the savory options - you have a little bit of everything. The dessert items were from local bakeries. This was just ok for me. The sweets were just too sweet and the sour too sour. The Passion Fruit Petit Four was too sour. The Chocolate Raspberry Tart (Peach’s & Cream Bakery) was a good balance of sweetness and slight bitterness of the chocolate and the tart of the raspberry filling The Bacon Pepita Brittle Pumpkin Spice Cupcake (Meg’s Minis) - a mouthful just tasted like a regular old pumpkin spice cupcake with a very, very sweet icing. The ‘bacon’ didn’t really hit well enough to register the taste. The Alfajores (Doris’ Peruvian Pastries) was a delicate melt in your mouth cookie, but the dulce de leche caramel was overly sweet. The French macaron (Mad Mac New York) was a little brittle on the outside and a tad bit soft and soggy on the inside. I don’t know if the filling was kept too long or the macaron itself was the issue. I’m clearly a savory loving person as I enjoyed those a lot more than the dessert items. The service was very good. The price for the experience is around $82 (including 20% gratuity). In terms of value for money it’s ok as a one-time thing. I don’t think I’ll be lining up for it again. Next time, I would like to try the lunch at Map Room, though.
