The Monocle Restaurant Washington Reviews from The Last Year
So good we went back the following night!
Visiting the USA from Wales, we spent a week in New York including a visit to Keens Chophouse before travelling on to DC for another week. We did our research in advance and booked The Monocle on the strength of reviews. It didn't disappoint, great welcome, service and food. It was so good we asked if we could have the same table for the same time the following night and they were happy to accommodate despite being very busy. First night I had the Octopus Santorini and it is amongst one of the best octopus dishes I've had and not only do I cook them myself we also have a villa in Portugal where the chefs really know how to cook them. The only hiccup over our two visits was the main course arriving almost at the exact same time that our appetizer plates were being cleared which was a bit too rushed for us. My wife had just left the table for the restroom and they had to keep her dish warm which wasn't ideal but they took the criticism well and slowed the service down for us the second night which was appreciated. The service staff were amazing as was the Maitre D, and John, the owner who gave us a lovely glass of port at the end of our meal and had a chat with us. We'll be returning many times to come.
Great food, cute vibe
The Monocle is a great high end restaurant. The food here is phenomenal and just the restaurant itself has so much character. I got an angus beef burger and it was great! It is very common to see senators, representatives, and other members of government here as well as celebrities in general. I highly recommend eating here. (Lunch is cheaper)
A great business lunch but get a reservation
We were on the hill for congressional visits and happened to see that the Monocle was open for lunch. We had wanted to go for dinner but our group was too big as they cannot handle a group larger than 10. We got the chance to walk in as they started lunch service the next day by random luck. They did not have a main floor table available for us as they were packed on a Tuesday with reservations, but they kindly sat us at the bar. Bartender made it a good meal with his happy attitude and sense of humor. I had the chicken milanese and it was wonderful. While we sat at the bar, we didn't get to partake since we had more meetings that day, but the bar was well stocked for being small. This is definitely a DC institution with congressional regulars and business meeting regulars filling the place. It is worth the trip but you may not get in if you don't reserve in advance.
Very enjoyable evening!
My wife and I were visiting Washington D.C. from Miami and had dinner at The Monocle last week. We really enjoyed the food, its cozy atmosphere, the premises, but above all, the service offered by its great Staff! The host is extremely welcoming, professional and pleasant; he makes you feel just at home as soon as you walk into the restaurant. We will definitely recommend this place to our family members and all friends on their next visit to the beautiful city of Washington D.C.
Holiday trip to the US Capital.
Whilst visiting Washington from the Uk we decided to have dinner at the monocle. What a treat. The food, service and reception from the owner was sublime. Great atmosphere and brilliant experience. Five Stars!
The Monocle is worth it.
Waiters were busy, but very accommodating. Historic restaurant for the Washington DC area. Business casual dress, if available to you, but the restaurant seems to welcome all.
BEST service we have ever had period. Old world fine dining charm. Food was excellent. Make this restaurant a priority.
The absolute BEST restaurant in years! A friend recommended this place and forgot to tell us it was “fine dining”. We walked in with tanks and shorts after walking around all day in the heat. They didn’t bat an eye. It has old world charm that is hard to find. They easily accommodated our party of 11. We have a very active 5yr old boy plus 4 more kids so when I walked in and saw white tablecloths , no children in restaurant and signed pictures of previous presidents on the walls I was nervous. But from the moment we walked in we couldn’t have had a more enjoyable experience. The service was the best out of any restaurant we have been to. The servers genuinely seemed to enjoy their job and enjoy the kids. When our kids were getting loud and we would try and hush them a server would come by and tell us not worry they are just kids. Our party couldn’t believe how nice the staff was. It wasn’t just a “job” for them. They truly seemed happy to have us there. It is hard to be attentive without being overbearing and they did a perfect job! Our group is still talking about how nice the people were at this restaurant. Food was excellent. Starting with warm bread and ending with delicious crème brûlée. Food was served quickly which is huge when you are eating with kids. You must eat at this gem! You will not find better service anywhere!
Old school in a good way
It's been doing what it does for years. It shows that experience does count. Old school service and great steaks. We had a small issue which was resolved gracefully and honestly which showed they appreciated our custom. Recommended
An excellent Restaurant in the Capitol District
This review is based on a large group having dinner in one of the private rooms, so I cannot speak to individual dining. What I can speak to is how marvelous my experience was, both at the downstairs bar when we first arrived, before we were ushered upstairs to our main dining room where some twenty of us dined. Our bartender was professional, adept and handled our many drink orders in a very timely fashion. Upstairs our servers were again most professional, polite and eager to accommodate any of our wishes. I luckily ordered the bronzino in a delicate shrimp sauce and it was outstanding. Cooked perfectly and served with sumptuous potatoes gratin and tasty garden veggies. The shellfish bisque was an excellent starter. Others ordered the pork chop and proclaimed their deep satisfaction. I have often found large business meals to be hit or miss. Monocle's dinner was a home run. I would love to return as an ordinary diner.
