Delicious food.
Although the restaurant was packed and a bit stuffy and hot. Friendly service, close to train to take you to downtown Rome

Hands down one of the best restaurants we ate in throughout our trip to Italy. It's the perfect place to avoid flocks of tourists and dine amongst locals, probably because of its location out of the city center. Everything you order is delicious - from the pastas to the beef stew. While I'm tempted to gate keep, I have nothing else to say but to put Da Cesare at the top of your list! Be sure to reserve and ask to be seated outside not inside.

Finally got here and this instantly became one of our very favorites in Rome. The fried gnocchi in pecorino sauce was amazing, but to me the biggest stars of the apps were the incredible eggplant croquettes and absolutely perfect anchovies in olive oil. On the pasta front, the cacio pepe here is probably our favorite anywhere, and the gricia is definitely near the top of the list -- comparable in terms of quality to the one we had at Tavernaccia the night before, but with crispier guanciale. We also got a margherita pizza, but we'd probably skip that next time.

Highly recommended by the conceirge at the Cavalieri and it did not disappoint. While off the beaten path it is well worth the trip to this primarily local spot. We split various appetizers including the calamari, the prosciutto and melon and bufala mozzerella to name a few. I had the carbonara which was exactly how it should be prepared; with plenty of guinciale. Everyone else loved their entrees which ranged from the famous fried gnocchi with pecorino cream (excellent!) to the pizzas. The local red paired well with everything and the desserts were also quite good. Our server spoke English very well and was friendly and engaging the entire time. The owner also came over to check on us which was a nice touch. Everyone agreed this was one of the best restaurants we visited in our many trips to Rome.

Our first night in Rome, we were excited to go to an "authentic Roman trattoria." I always seek out places off the tourist path.. We felt unwelcome from the moment we walked in (though we had reservations). No greeting when waiter came to our table. When our order was taken, we chose the type of pastas we wanted, but were told our choices were "not possible," so we ordered what the waiter said was possible; however, he also failed to take down our order correctly. One of us ordered cacio e pepe, but it came out as another carbonara. (Frankly, the ravioli that was ordered also tasted like carbonara). And it was not very good carbonara-thick, salty and too rich. We then had to flag down the waiter (who never came to check up on us after the initial food delivery) to ask about our vegetable side dishes. Well, we were told those "come out last"? Side dishes after the meal ...OK..We've been eating in multiple Italian cities for the past week, greeted by cheerful, helpful people and eating delightful meals. This is our first bad experience- both food quality and service. It seems that "Authentic Roman" has a meaning different from what I thought.

So amazing! Made the trek here for dinner and it was well worth it! Cannot go wrong with anything on the menu and waiters were so great and accommodating since we didn't have reservations (or speak much Italian).Thank you to everyone at Da Cesare who made my trip to Italy unforgettable with beyond delicious food!!!
Be the first to ReplyThis was my favorite restaurant in Rome.
I highly recommend the deep fried gnocchi in cacio e pepe sauce. That dish alone was perfection. The pastas were excellent, as well as the fish and deep fried eggplant fritters. Everything we ordered was delicious. Make sure you have a reservation. The service is friendly and you know the food is authentic with the heavy presence of locals.

I'd give 6 out of 5 stars! authentic delicious Roman Trattoria, the best Cacio e Pepe ever in Rome! great service and amazing selection of food and wine!

Placed on the itinerary of travelers visiting The Eternal City by both Eater and "A Pasta Lover's Guide to Rome," Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto resides in an apartment block distant from the rest of Rome's great eateries, this and the "by phone only" reservations policy assuring mostly locals lining up for traditional fare in a large but stark dining room.Known simply as "Da Cesare" to many, and closed Wednesday but otherwise open from 12h45 to 15h00 for lunch plus 19h45 pm to 23h00 pm for dinner, it is primarily by bus or Uber that guests make way to Rome's Monteverde Nuovo neighborhood, this particular evening finding nearly every indoor seat packed as temperatures were too cold for the patio.Lacking central Rome's cobblestone, wider streets and a sizable park giving the surrounding are a distinctly more residential feel, it is once seated that servers present with convivial charm, English-fluency limited but made less necessary by translated menus.Dubbed by one local writer as "the perfect Trattoria" back in 2012, a bare-bones building with bright lights placing diners' focus on Food and conversation, it is from Fritti, Pizza, Primi and Secondi that guests may choose to build their meal, affordable Wines also highlighted such as €4 for a particularly generous pour of Prosecco.Built on classics, but ranging widely enough to please most palates, one will quickly notice most tables enjoying good Bread while debating options, the Gnocchi Fritti frequently following with fried Dumplings swimming in a pool of what amounts to Cacio e Pepe Fondue.Refined without feeling "stuffy," the servers seemingly everywhere at once despite lengthy expediting times, Pizza comes on a crisp but forgettable Crust while Pastas allow diners to select their own Noodle and Sauce combination, such as thin Ribbons of Fettuccine slicked with Egg Yolk and Pork Jowl in the case of good Carbonara.Leaving the Egg out of square-cut Tonnarelli, a dry Noodle cooked al dente, flavors leaned a bit too salty in Da Cesare's alla Gricia while Hunter's style Veal got lost amongst Olives and Garlic, thus raising Coda alla Vaccinara's stock as the better Secondi.

While visiting Rome, my family and I stopped here to have lunch for the day. We were looking forward to pizza, but pizza is only served for dinner. So I decided on this beef pasta, I can't remember the name. I wasn't too crazy about it but it was alright. The service was great though, very friendly and helpful waitresses. Although some don't speak English, they still try very hard to serve you the best they can. Props to them! Which is why I will give 4 stars.

We specifically sought out a dinner at Da Cesare while we were in Rome and I was not at all disappointed by the food! Atmosphere and service-wise, it wasn't anything remarkable but the food was so good that it didn't even matter. We started with the fried eggplant and gnocchi. The former was one of the best things we ate in Italy. Crispy on the outside, yet somehow so soft and delicate on the inside. The gnocchi was certainly good, but afterward, I wished we would have skipped it because it was a bit too heavy and filling before our pasta entrees. I ordered the rigatoni alla gricia and it was possibly the best dish I ate in Rome. It was just perfect. Finished our meal with the panna cotta and it was just ever-so-slighty sweet in the best way. I would highly recommend this place!

Excellent food. Lovely atmosphere. So very Roman. We had hoped to have a memorable last lunch in Rome. We were not disappointed. We started with a variety of appetizers - suppli, bruschetta, calamari. We followed with pastas and meat. The ravioli was excellent. The gnocchi was very good. The steak was less not good. Undercooked (blue) and grisly - the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. But it was offset by the rest of the meal.Dessert was excellent. A sampler of desserts that illustrated the diversity of options. As with most popular Italian restaurants, do not expect to be seated without a reservation.

Our best dinner in Rome! The staff was great, the food outstanding and priced well. Grazie!
Be the first to ReplyOn the outskirts of Rome in a nice neighborhood.
About a 20 Euro cab ride from our hotel on Via Veneto. Buddy of mine and I decided to just order whatever sounded good, and not a single dish disappointed. For starters, we had meatballs, eggplant fritters, and fried squash blossoms. All were fantastic. Two pastas -- gricia and cacio e pepe. Amazing. And meat courses of roasted lamb with rosemary, and trippa al sugo (tripe with red sauce and cheese). Both were awesome. Service was fantastic. Front of the house was warm and friendly. We were the only two people in the packed house speaking English (other than our accommodating waiter), so we knew we were in a good spot. And for all of that food and a bottle of red wine, the bill topped out at a very reasonable 120 Euros. I'd recommend this neighborhood gem to anyone visiting Rome. It is well worth a trip off the beaten path.

Off the beated path (still)Truly Roman cuisine in a non touristy spot. The place is nothing special, but the food makes it really worth trying. Staff is super nice. Fried appetizers and pastas are the go to.
