Underbelly San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
The bartender was clearly quite high when she came in, and
The bartender was clearly quite high when she came in, and said she had just woken up. My friend and I each ordered a drink and then were never spoken to or checked on again. While my friend was hunting down the tab, I went to the front to ask where the restroom was. The gal seemed very annoyed and her tone of voice was so harsh, "Straight down and to the left!" However she didn't point in a direction or nod her head to indicate a direction. I turned and looked at the bar, then turned toward her - clearly unsure of her directions. Now even more snarky "Straight down and TO THE LEFT!" Wow. I come back from the restroom to my friend and the bartender bickering. My friend had shared her frustration that we were ignored. Apparently the young lady was so high she didn't even remember talking to us AT ALL, our discussion of the Reisling options, or even ordering our drinks. As we were walking out, I stoped at the front to talk to person that had been so rude, Jenny. I said, "Hi, I am the gal that just asked where the bathroom was..." I was interrupted by her snapping back, "Did you not hear me?!" My eyes went big with shock. Speechless, I just turned and walked out the door. We went to a nearby restaurant, as we were starving. Sharing our experience with some people there - they all said Underbelly was fairly known for their bad of service. We definitely won't return, however we're so happy to have found the next place. The food was amazing, and the server definitely deserved the $75 tip we left him.
This restaurant is one of my favorite ramen restaurants
This restaurant is one of my favorite ramen restaurants period. I moved out of California so obviously I had to go back when I visited San Diego. The ramen is still the same, very rich in flavor and comforting. I always order either the Belly of the Beast or Underbelly ramen. I just wish they had full service and not make customers get in line to order. For some reason they're always playing hip hop, definitely not my style. The only reason why I gave this place 5 stars is fully because of their delicious foods.
The service here is decent.
Basically the only time you would see the servers is when you order and when they take out the orders. Beside that, its basically self serve. I went here with a couple of friends late night (9 PM), wishing to try different food. Do not get me wrong, the food is delicious! We just had a different experience than what we had intended. As soon as you enter the doors, you would order like a fast food chain, when orders are places, you basically have to look for your seat. It is an open area, with benches and tables open for all to choose. For water, they have a water dispensers located in the corner for guests to grab themselves. When the food comes out, the display is amazing. When I tried it, the soups is delicious, but one thing I would definitely change is adding less salt. The soup tasted delicious, but because of how salty it is, I would be constantly drinking water, which basically filled me up.

Two stars for the Ube Colada with boba! This drink is delicious. Zero stars for service. Dude taking orders was kind, the food runner girl with short hair/highlights? Not so much. We used to like this place, but service went downhill. Now you seat yourself, serve yourself water, & apparently staff can't be bothered to grab you a high chair if your hands are full. Oh, you grab your own to-go boxes too. It's laughable to ask for tips at the counter when you're ordering since this is basically a self-service "experience." We gladly tip for service received, but never again at this place...
There are no words to describe how much I love this place.
The food, the service, the ambiance...all five star. Special mention for Luis, who absolutely made my night. I'd come back for him alone! The bento boxes are sublime. I had the veggie and my friend had the meat. We both were extremely impressed. Mine had crispy tofu with rice, tempura eggplant, kimchi, and cucumber salad. Scrumptious! I also ordered the eggplant bao, which was so heavenly that I would visit again if that was the only thing on the menu. Utterly delectable! My two other friends ordered ramen, which smelled amazing. We all had cocktails, and I can tell you the Fuji-san is super tasty and packs a bit of a wallop! Please do yourself a favor and visit. You can't miss this spot. Affordable, delicious food and accommodating, friendly service. Well done, Underbelly!
I think this restaurant is a staple in northpark, i love
I think this restaurant is a staple in northpark, i love how it's open pretty late. There is a large selection of ramen to choose from. I have been coming here for years. The only strange thing the restaurant has started to do is , they said they recommend the ramen broth be slurped from the bowl. So they stopped giving out spoons. Culturlly it is not rude and it's normally to slurp ramen in Japan. But i feel like it's kinda of cheap to do that now. They had spoons last year and the year before that served with the ramen.

I was excited to try Underbelly after seeing all the amazing reviews. I got an order to go, which I recommend because there's usually always a line. I got Tonkotsu ramen, which was extremely underwhelming. The seaweed made the broth extremely fishy for some reason which threw off the taste a little bit, and the pork belly was really fatty. I do want to give it another try since everyone else has raved about it, but I will not get, or do not recommend the Tonkotsu.
Food was amazing as always.
Decided to switch it up this time and got the Tonkatsu instead of the Underbelly. Man I don't know why I never got the Tonkatsu instead. Was definitely full after. Service is always immaculate and fast. Sat by the fire pit tables was definitely warm and inviting. Wish they had a rewards punch card for as many times as I go.
Ramen broth is very hearty and has so much depth.
Great environment for multiple occasions

I'm obsessed with underbelly! I'm literally here once a week. I usually get the Tonkatsu ramen with extra pork belly *chefs kiss* I love the openness of the seating area. Great spot for date night!
Such great ramen!
As you know, parking is always tricky in North Park but there is plenty of parking available in the neighborhood. The service was so quick. We got water and as we turned around our food was already delivered to our table. They have self serve water (plain and sparkling) outside. I love how spacious outdoor/bar seating is on the patio. The music was great. A great vibe overall. I definitely recommend giving this place a try if you're in the area and craving some bomb ramen! Food review: Underbelly ramen: (5/5) The noodles, meat, and broth were all perfection in this bowl of ramen! It was a good portion and the meat was SO tender and delicious! Tonkotsu ramen: (5/5) The noodles were cooked perfectly, pork was tender and flavorful, the soft boiled egg is always my favorite part, and the broth is delicious, I could just drink bowls of it. It's not super heavy and has so much flavor. Beef gyoza: (4/5) These were tasty, but there was not as much filling/meat inside as we like. Short rib bao: (3.5/5) The meat was very tender, but the coleslaw and spicy mustard didn't mesh well together in my opinion. I ate the meat, pickle, and bun and it was delicious. It comes with 2 buns, so plenty to share!
Good ramen!
Pretty good ramen and appetizers. If it’s a bit chilly outside it is hard to find anything that’s not open tonsils you from the wind. Ended up having the chicken bao buns and chicken confit ramen. Both were pretty with with nice flavor and good portion sizes!
Street style yummy customizable ramen in a chill atmosphere.
This place offered fully customizable ramen with suggestions if you couldn’t decide. Their sides went well with ramen and the drink options alcoholic and non alcoholic were all part of the experience. The vibe was Japanese street noodle bar with amazing chill hip hop vibes in music.
Excellent tonkatsu ramen in outdoor setting with communal tables
Belly of the Beast ramen was very flavorful. Broth had a nice spicy afterburn. It contains a variety of meats, including oxtail and short ribs. Meat portions are relatively small, but that's probably to maintain a relatively low price point. Order at the register and the food comes out promptly. It was pretty busy at 5PM on a Sunday night. Most of the communal tables and counter stools were taken but people dine fairly quickly so seats seem to open up. There are a few counter seats near the prep area. Entertaining to watch the chefs though the seating area is warmer and not as well-ventilated as the outdoor patio.
Good ramen covered in flies
Overrun by flies. One was in the sause jar under the lid. It completely grossed me out. The ramen was good. But the flies! Oh goodness. Management unresponsive. Difficult to order, system is disorganized and not customer friendly
