White Spot (Best Western Plus, Oak & Marine) Vancouver Reviews from The Last Year
If it Ain’t Broke, why Fix it?
White Spot is indeed a BC legend. In continuous operation for nearly 96 years, White Spot has grown from a humble “traveling lunch counter” into a trusted, beloved BC-brand. There is little doubt that founder Nat Bailey would be proud of his restaurant chain today. It has become synonymous with the Province and its signature burgers frequently make various “best of” lists – and that alone speaks volumes. I’ve been a fan of White Spot since early childhood. The brand carries a number of memories for me. A few examples: 1) In the mid-1990s, the family and I stopped at the now defunct White Spot in Williams Lake for dinner. My dear mom was traveling with us; she ordered clam chowder. When the chowder arrived, it was clearly from the bottom of the pot. It was so thick that the soup spoon could stand up in the center of the bowl unaided! Of course, my mom sent the chowder back. We could see the kitchen from where we were seated and the cooks in the back were openly laughing at the returned soup! 2) In the late 1990s, we were visiting family in Chilliwack during Thanksgiving. Most everybody ordered turkey with all the trimmings. When it came time for my brother to order, he spouted off a whole list of things: Chicken strips w/ fries, turkey dinner, and a salad. When my grandmother told him “no” because he wouldn’t be able to eat all that, he retorted kind of angrily: “Okay, I’ll get the LARGE turkey dinner!” Keep in mind he wasn’t even ten years old haha; 3) More recently, the White Spot in Chilliwack served as one of our first major family dine-in experiences during the height of the COVID pandemic. After many months of isolating, it was nice to enjoy a good meal with great company! All of this is to say I generally tend to enjoy White Spot. One of the things I’ve consistently said in my various reviews of White Spot, over the years, is their fish & chips has been criminally underrated. The ample fresh cod, light batter and delicious fries made for the perfect bite, rivaling even well-known fish & chip eateries. In short, it was something I looked forward to having whenever I visited this “legendary” restaurant. Unfortunately, White Spot has apparently decided to fix something that didn’t need fixing . . . In any event, I was recently traveling with my grandparents for medical. We decided to hit up White Spot during one of our nights in the city. I was excited and looking forward to enjoying some fish & chips! Thus, we made our way to the White Spot restaurant on Southwest Marine Drive. Situated within the Best Western Plus, this unit of White Spot is one of the smaller locations I’ve visited; however, the ambiance and atmosphere was vintage White Spot! My grandparents and I were seated at a corner table. As I sat here, I couldn’t help but notice the overwhelming amount of senior citizens in the restaurant. Ironically, my grandparents also commented upon the high number of “white and grey heads” in the restaurant. I say “ironic” because they were probably the two oldest people in there! Anyway, service started off really good. We were dutifully greeted and our orders taken. My grandfather ordered a Beef Dip w/ Caesar salad; my grandmother ordered a strawberry milkshake and 2-piece fish & chips (we each had one); while I settled on the Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Legendary Burger with Yam Fries. Imagine my surprise, though, as I read the menu and saw that the fish & chips now featured haddock instead of cod. What the heck? When did this happen? Doing some quick research, I discovered that haddock was introduced as a “limited time” item in the autumn of 2022. Well, no wonder I missed this . . . the last time I dined at White Spot was December 2021. Still, for a limited time item, I’m surprised the haddock is still on the menu. Popularity? Or, a great way to reduce costs? I suspect the latter. The change was, admittedly, moderately disappointing. But how was all the food? STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE: The milkshake is one of White Spot’s signature items. I love how they continue to bring the “extra” in the tin container. As was expected, it was perfectly done. The milkshake wasn’t overly thick (i.e.: McDonald’s), and we loved the “chunks” of strawberry contained within! CRISPY BRUSSELS SPROUTS: A new addition to the menu, the Brussels sprouts are fried until crispy and tossed with Caesar dressing, bacon and parmesan cheese. From the very first bite, I thought these were a winner. The Brussels had a nice char to them and the creamy Caesar worked beautifully with the parmesan cheese and bacon. I would definitely order this appetizer again! LEGENDARY BURGER W/ YAM FRIES: The yam fries and their accompanying chipotle dip were vintage White Spot, but my “legendary burger” seemed out of step. First, they were super cheap with the “triple o” sauce; and, second, the burger seemed very under-seasoned, overdone and dry – very unlike a typical White Spot burger. BEEF DIP: Not much to say here. My grandfather said it was good (he finished the whole thing). FISH & CHIPS: For me, this was clearly the biggest disappointment. The two pieces of haddock were large, but I don’t think that compensates for the poorer quality fish. Cod tastes so much better, ditto the seasonal halibut. The haddock was unremarkable. Why ruin a good thing? Anyway, after we received our food, the quality of service dropped off a cliff. I realize it was a busy night, so I’m not talking about frequency of checking in; rather, I mean the overly long wait to receive our bill after requesting it. Total time between request and receipt? 35 minutes! Even I’ll admit that’s a bit much. FOOD: 3/5 SERVICE: 2.5/5 ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 VALUE: 3/5 RECOMMENDATION: Well, White Spot is very much a BC institution and they still have a number of dishes I’m a fan of. Thus, I’ll still attend these restaurants. I’m hoping my mediocre “legendary burger” was a one off and I sincerely hope they revert back to cod for the fish and chips. Probably the best thing about the best western Vancouver airport hotel
Great breakfast menu, food was delicious. I had a Mexican inspired dish and it was very tasty. Coffee was great too. Very friendly staff, comfortable and clean dining area.
Good breakfast, convenient location!
We stayed at the Best Western Plus and ate here b/c it was open early. Enjoyed breakfast, Charred Tomato and Spinach Benedict (I had the hollandaise on the side) was yummy and very filling. Smashbrown potatoes were good, I’d probably prefer the shredded hashbrowns next time though. Friendly staff, good service.
Plentiful servings
Service was good. The food & pricing was fair. Facility needs a good deep clean....carpets are pathetic & place just looks a bit run down.
